Lighting is the most important factor for planted tank success — and the most misunderstood. The stock LEDs that come with starter kits are almost always too dim for live plants. Here's what actually works.

What makes a good planted tank light?

Look for: full spectrum (includes red and blue wavelengths plants use most), PAR value (Photosynthetically Active Radiation — the actual light plants use), programmable timer and dimming, and coverage for your tank size. Watts per gallon is an outdated metric — PAR is what matters.

2. Finnex Planted+ 24/7 — Best Mid-Range

The Finnex Planted+ is beloved by the planted tank community for its excellent PAR, reasonable price ($80-100), and the 24/7 mode that automatically simulates sunrise, daytime, sunset, and moonlight. Perfect for medium-light plants. Less powerful than the Fluval for high-light demanding species.

3. Nicrew ClassicLED — Best Budget

At $25-35, the Nicrew ClassicLED won't grow carpet plants — but it'll keep easy plants like Java fern, Anubias, and moss thriving. For beginners who don't want to invest heavily in lighting yet, it's a solid starting point. Upgrade to Fluval or Finnex when you're ready for more demanding plants.
