A gravel vacuum (siphon) is one of the most used tools in fishkeeping. You'll use it every single week during water changes to suck out detritus, leftover food, and fish waste that accumulates in the substrate. The right one makes this 10-minute chore almost enjoyable. The wrong one makes it a nightmare.
1. Python No Spill Clean and Fill — Best Overall
The Python system connects directly to your sink faucet. It sucks water out of the tank through the gravel, then reverses to fill the tank back up with tap water — all without carrying buckets. It's a game-changer for large tanks or anyone who hates bucket brigades. The only downside: you must add dechlorinator to the tank before refilling.
Python No Spill Clean and Fill
Connect to your faucet, vacuum the gravel, refill the tank — all without lifting a bucket. The best investment for weekly maintenance.
2. Fluval Edge Gravel Cleaner — Best Budget
At $12-15, the Fluval Edge is the standard starter siphon. You start it by shaking the tube up and down in the tank to create suction, then gravity does the rest into a bucket. Simple, reliable, no batteries needed. Perfect for tanks under 30 gallons.
Fluval Gravel Vacuum Cleaner
Simple, reliable, and inexpensive. The classic siphon starter tool for smaller tanks under 30 gallons.
Gravel vacuuming tips
Don't vacuum planted areas — you'll disturb roots and suck up substrate. Focus on open areas where fish poop accumulates. Vacuum only 50% of the substrate per session to preserve beneficial bacteria in the gravel. Change 25% of water at the same time. Do this weekly and your tank will almost never have water quality issues.
